Lanternwood Hollow

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Lanternwood Hollow is the kind of game you play with headphones on and the lights low. You explore a fog-wrapped forest town, tapping to move, examining objects, and slowly untangling what happened to the people who used to live there. The art is hand-drawn and gorgeous.

Puzzles are woven into the environment rather than dropped in as busywork. Most of them made us stop and think, and none of them stumped us with unfair logic. The touch interface is clean — tap to interact, drag to combine items, and that's about it.

It's not a long game, but it lingers. Days later we were still thinking about the ending, which is more than we can say for most mobile titles.
